Filling the Gaps in Original Medicare
Even with Original Medicare (Parts A & B), you’re still responsible for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Over time, those costs can add up; especially if you have frequent doctor visits, hospital stays, or ongoing care needs.
That’s where Medicare Supplement Insurance (commonly called Medigap) comes in. These private insurance plans help cover the “gaps” left by Medicare, giving you more predictable costs and peace of mind.
What Medigap Covers
Medigap policies are designed to complement your Original Medicare coverage, not replace it.
Depending on which plan you choose, your Medigap policy may help pay for:
- Part A hospital coinsurance and additional days (up to 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up)
- Part A and B deductibles
- Part B coinsurance or copayments
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits)
- Excess charges (if your doctor charges more than Medicare’s approved amount)
What Medigap Doesn’t Cover
Typically, Medigap plans don’t include:
- Prescription drugs (you’ll need a separate Part D plan)
- Dental, vision, or hearing coverage
- Long-term care or private-duty nursing
- Routine foot care, eyeglasses, or hearing aids
If you want those benefits, you can pair your Medigap with standalone dental/vision plans or wellness coverage.
How is Medigap Different From Medicare Advantage?
Choosing between Medigap and Medicare Advantage (Part C) often comes down to lifestyle and cost preferences.
